Swallow Rock, surrounded on three sides by the Yangtze River, is 34.2 meters above sea level and covers an area of about 1.1 hectares. It stands as one of the three famous projecting rocks along Yangtze River. Along the river in this area, there are many human and natural scenic spots. Emperor Qianlong went to Swallow Rock three times during his six tours to the south of Yangtze River and left the imperial tablet pavilion. There is a stone pavilion in which stood a monument on the megalith that lies on the right side of the Swallow Rock. It was erected in order to commemorate the great number of Chinese who were killed by the Japanese army. Swallow Rock is a famous scenic spot and strategic point in history.

Jiming Temple is located in the northeast of Nanjing. It was first built in the Southern Tang (937-975) and again in the Song Dynasty (960-1279). The surviving temple was built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). With Xuanwu Lake on the back, Jiming Temple faces Purple Mountain to the east. The Guanyin Building, Huomeng Building, Jingyang Building and the Rouge are inside the temple ground. There still remains a section of the old palace wall called Taicheng behind the temple.

Linggu Temple is located in the east of the Mausoleum of Dr. Sun Yat-sen with an overall area of 2,036 square meters (about 2435 square yards). The surroundings are very attractive. Maples and roburs can be found everywhere around this temple. The colorful scenery will make you relax and reluctant to leave during late fall each year.

Buddhist Scriptures Building was a memento building constructed by Mr. Sun Yat Sen after the construction of Fengan Cemetary. It is located east of Zhongshan mausoleum and between the valleys of the west mountain.

The observatory is located on the west peak of the Zijin Hill. It is 370 meters above sea level and is constructed in 1929. It is China’s first modern observatory and is now under the administration of Chinese Academy of Science. The observatory keeps and exhibits ancient astronomical instruments invented by the Chinese. It has Department of Astrophysics, Department of Celestial Mechanics, Lab of Radio Astronomy and Lab of Space Astronomy. Visitors can ride the cable car to reach the observatory.

Purple Golden Mountain is known as the “lung of Nanjing” and for good reason. This massive, forested park area situated within Nanjing boasts fresh and cool air compared to the muggy, polluted city center.
